New Settlement Project Approved in Jordan Valley Draws Palestinian Objections

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities have authorized a large-scale settlement expansion project in the occupied West Bank’s Jordan Valley, involving the construction of hundreds of new housing units on Palestinian land, according to a Palestinian government body.

According to reports, the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission said approval was granted for “a massive colonial structural plan” aimed at expanding the Masua settlement in the Al-Far’a Valley area of the Jericho governorate.

The commission said the project reflects Israel’s ongoing efforts to accelerate settlement growth throughout the Jordan Valley.

Under the approved plan, 517 additional settlement units are set to be built across 1,692 dunams (418 acres) of land. The commission described the initiative as “a major expansion” of settlement infrastructure that will take place on land claimed by Palestinians.

Reports indicated that the project extends beyond housing construction and includes public facilities, utility networks, roads, service zones, operational structures, and open areas. The commission said these elements demonstrate “a clear Israeli direction” toward turning the settlement into “an integrated colonial bloc capable of future expansion.”

The commission further argued that the initiative is part of a broader strategy designed to strengthen Israeli control over the Jordan Valley while isolating the region “demographically and geographically” through continued settlement growth, land appropriation, and limitations on Palestinian development.

It also warned that settlement roads and related infrastructure projects represent some of the most significant mechanisms of “creeping annexation” and the creation of new realities on the ground.

The commission expressed concern over what it described as a growing pace of settlement activity in the Jordan Valley and urged the international community to fulfill its legal and political obligations in response to Israeli actions in the area.
