Egypt Stresses Diplomacy Key to Ending Iran-U.S. War
According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the two officials discussed the latest developments surrounding US-Iran negotiations currently being hosted by Pakistan, with Witkoff personally briefing Abdelatty on Washington's stance at the negotiating table — exchanges described as occurring "within the framework of close coordination and continuous consultation between Egypt and the United States."
The US envoy, for his part, praised "the existing cooperation and Egypt's efforts in supporting security and stability in the Middle East," the statement noted.
Abdelatty delivered a firm call for restraint, stressing the importance of adhering to diplomacy and dialogue and pursuing peaceful solutions "to reach an agreement on all outstanding issues to preserve regional security and stability."
The diplomatic push comes against a backdrop of deepening crisis. More than 3,000 people have been killed since US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began on February 28. Tehran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes against Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, before both sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire earlier this week.
That pause has yet to yield a breakthrough. Iranian and US delegations concluded a grueling 21-hour round of negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, early Sunday without reaching an agreement.
