MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night, Sept. 21, 2026
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: None
Of Note:
- Held a moment of silence for Paul Jordan of Wakefield, a carpenter who had a medical emergency Friday working on the new Middletown Middle High School. Flags were flown at half mast in Jordan’s honor, who was the uncle of Middletown Firefighter John Jordan.
- Supported a request from the Middletown 250 Committee to put in a Middletown Revolutionary War Memorial in Paradise Valley Park near the recently installed Liberty Tree as part of the community’s America 250 birthday celebration.
- Voted to schedule public hearing on proposed incentives from the Planning Board to promote preservation of historic buildings and resources. A date for the hearing wasn’t announced Monday night, but would be widely advertised once it was set.
- Forwarded a request from council President Paul M. Rodrigues to town officials to look into a new crosswalk on West Main Road from Planet Fitness to Elmwood Avenue.
- Supported a request from Councilor Charlie Roberts to update the town’s existing surviving spouse property tax exemption through the state General Assembly.
- Proclaimed Oct. 19 as Mental Health Day in Middletown at Rodrigues’ request, something supported by the entire council given rising mental health issues locally and beyond.
- Asked Town Solicitor Peter Regan to research how best to stem the potential use of buildings converted through adaptive reuse regulations into short-term rentals, a request of Councilor Chris Logan. Local leaders said they’d prefer to see underutilized vacant commercial properties and the like for affordable housing instead of a moneymaker for developers.
Next Regular Meeting: Monday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall
